Khan, a Pakistani-born American billionaire is a businessman who owns the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL), the English Premier League team Fulham F.C., and automobile parts manufacturer Flex-N-Gate in Urbana, Illinois. Flex-N-Gate Corporation, the 14th-largest North American automotive supplier, employs over 16,000 people at 52 manufacturing and nine product development and engineering facilities throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Spain.
Khan moved from his native Pakistan in 1967 at the age of 16 to attend the University of Illinois. While in school, Khan worked at the automotive manufacturing company Flex-N-Gate. He became the company engineering director after graduation. In 1978, Khan started Bumper Works which made car bumpers for customized pickup trucks and body shop repairs. In 1980 Khan bought Flex-N-Gate from his former employer and brought Bumper Works into the fold. Kahn has expanded on his interests in biofuels and structural engineering by starting Bio-Alternative, LLC, promoting the use of biodiesel, and Smart Structures, which advances the technology of bridge monitoring
In addition to his generosity to his Alma Mater, Khan and his wife, Ann, have focused their philanthropic giving in the Jacksonville community through the Jaguars Foundation contributing to the Jacksonville Mayor’s initiative to military service members transitioning back to civilian life, North Florida Boy Scouts, One Spark, and numerous local children’s and family programs.
In 2007 Mr. Khan received the Minority Business Leadership Award from the National Minority Supplier Development Council and Automotive News ranked Flex-N-Gate the 14th largest North American automotive supplier for 2010. When asked about Flex-N-Gate’s remarkable success, Khan is quick to note that he is proof the American dream is still alive and attainable.
