Following his introduction to the stage during Monday’s sold-out Global Issues Evening, General David H. Petraeus, USA (Ret.), opened with a touch of humor: “Thank you for that introduction. And thank you for leaving out the part about me being Time Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’ runner-up to Vladimir Putin. However, I’m happy to report I’ve been sanctioned by Vladimir Putin in the past couple of years for my support of Ukraine.” This light-hearted start set the tone for an insightful evening, offering a nuanced view of a decorated American leader with a distinguished yet complex history.
In conversation with retired three-star General Guy Swan, a current World Affairs Council of Jacksonville board member, Petraeus explored the future of warfare amid rapid technological advancements and evolving global power structures. Drawing on insights from his book, Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine, Petraeus shared his expertise on the strategic implications of modern warfare. His analysis covered a wide range of topics, from the impact of artificial intelligence and cyber capabilities on military operations to the growing importance of alliances in countering asymmetric threats. The evening left attendees with a deeper understanding of the strategic shifts shaping contemporary conflict.
