On December 4, 2024, 3-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Sanger delivered an incisive presentation entitled “The New Cold Wars” at the University of North Florida, exploring the evolving dynamics of global power.

Sanger reflected on the world American leaders anticipated in the 1990s—one where major powers like Russia and China aligned with U.S. values and leadership—that never materialized. Instead, he posited, the next 30 years will be defined by contention, with Moscow and Beijing leading efforts to construct an alternative to the U.S.-led international system.

He traced this shift to pivotal moments, including Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2021, driven by Putin’s imperial ambitions. Similarly, Sanger examined Xi Jinping’s long-term strategies for China, including expanding its nuclear capabilities, building the largest military, and leading in technology by 2049.

Sanger emphasized that the United States must adapt its strategies to this complex environment, balancing defense, technological leadership, and economic independence from China. While challenges abound, he noted reasons for optimism, citing the resilience of the U.S. economy, the global appeal of American universities, and the potential for burden-sharing with allies.

Closing on a hopeful note, Sanger affirmed that by leveraging American strengths and fostering allied cooperation, “we have a shot” at navigating these new cold wars successfully.
