March is Women’s History Month. Throughout the month, the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville is highlighting the women who have displayed immense leadership, created a lasting legacy, and contributed to the Council’s success. Their contributions have been integral to the growth and influence of the Council. Today, we feature Sandy Cook — an inspiring leader whose career is a testament to the power of philanthropy and empowering global education through various endeavors.
Sandy’s involvement with the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville has been a cornerstone of her commitment to civic engagement and education on international affairs. Prior to becoming the Chairman of the Board (2012-2015), Sandy served as a key architect to the Council’s success for many years – working diligently behind the scenes to address challenges, take on demanding tasks, and mentoring others to promote the Council’s mission of bringing the world closer to Northeast Florida.
Under Sandy’s leadership, the Council made great strides in expanding educational resources. She contributed to the implementation of the Council’s education program Great Decisions, a year-long student enrichment program on foreign affairs. Sandy also spearheaded the teacher enrichment program, which provided middle and high school teachers from Northeast Florida opportunities to travel to Turkey. This remarkable program allowed teachers to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, broaden their global awareness, and gain new perspectives. Furthermore, her stewardship of the education endowment housed at The Community Foundation of Northeast Florida has been extraordinary in helping advance the educational initiatives of the Council.
In addition to her work with the Council, Sandy was instrumental in shaping the Women’s Giving Alliance (WGA) of Jacksonville, where she served as President from 2005-2006. Under her leadership, the WGA funded multiple projects that researched and provided vital information on the status of women and girls throughout Northeast Florida.
Through it all, Sandy’s vision and unwavering dedication have left an enduring mark on her local community, championing the empowerment of women while advancing the Council’s mission to bring together individuals who share a deep interest in international affairs and the exchange of meaningful ideas. While she now resides in Colorado, Sandy remains committed to the work of the Council by contributing as a member of the Advisory Board, ensuring that her passion for global engagement and community-building endures.
